I quit going to the gym

Verse of the Week:

“Where there is no vision, the people perish” - Proverbs 29:18a

2021 is the year I quit going to the gym. Looking back, the seed was actually planted a year earlier but then I would have never guessed that.

Let me share a quick story.

Back in 2020, I started a job as a physical therapy aide at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital.

I encountered an occupational therapist who, on the side, competed in bodybuilding competitions. She once asked me a question that has since stayed with me.

“Hey Matt, I noticed that you are in shape. What are you training for?”

I was taken aback then shared, “That’s a really good question. Nobody has ever asked me that before. I train for fun so I don’t really have a goal.”

She responded, “Having a goal is so important. You need to have one. The risk of not having a goal is that eventually you’ll stop training.”

Arrogantly, I laughed and shrugged it off replying with, “I’ll be fine.”

Her being right is an understatement.

A year later, I asked myself during one of my training sessions, “Why exactly am I doing this? This is painful.”

I put down my weights, went downstairs, sat on the couch, and didn’t touch my weights for a year and a half. This led to gaining 60 pounds in the process.

Why did I quit?

Because I didn’t have a “North Star” that I was moving towards.

Life is full of challenges. It becomes easy to quit anything when those challenges arise. That is, unless you have a “North Star” keeping you motivated.

Having a “North Star” is the difference between:

  • A sustainable weight loss journey vs hitting a constant plateau

  • Getting out of debt and investing vs piling up so much debt that you can’t invest

  • Having a healthy, long lasting marriage vs marrying the wrong person that yields a painful divorce

Everyone needs a clear “North Star” and daily habits to support it.

Are you struggling to find your own “North Star” and develop the consistent habits to getting and staying in shape?

Fortunately, you don’t need to figure everything out on your own.

If you have real desire to change your life by taking control of your health, let’s talk through how you can make it happen. This WILL be the year you finally see results.

You can schedule a FREE consultation with me by clicking on the Calendly link below.

During this call, we’ll walk through your health history and desired goals then I’ll share about the J5M Health Program. You’ll leave this call with at least 1 action you can take right away to start seeing results.

Look forward to connecting soon!

J5M SELF-REFLECTION PROMPTS:

(We’ll be sharing consistent self-reflection prompts to help you build strong foundations.)

  1. What are the health and wellness goals you are working toward?

  2. Did you write these goals down somewhere you can always see them?

  3. What daily habits do you need to start, stop, and keep doing to help you get there?

If you easily responded to all three, then you are on the right path.

If you couldn’t, think once more about scheduling a free consultation call to see if the J5M Program can help you with the above. It’s a decision I know you won’t regret.

Enjoy the rest of your week.
