Stop Going from 0 to 100
Do This Instead

Go From 0 to 10 First
Imagine this scenario.
You go in for a doctor’s visit.
The doctor comes back and says that you need an entire lifestyle change or you’ll die within a year.
He writes you a prescription to tackle the symptoms then you drive home.
You get this sudden burst of motivation to change your life.
You’re “committed” to waking up at 5am, meal-prepping healthy foods, and throwing out all sodas/alcohol to replace them with water.
All of this excitement on day one but then you go back to your normal and sedentary, slow death routine.
This is sadly the reality of too many people.
The problem is that they are expecting themselves to undo years of bad habits easily.
For the 99% of us, that’s not possible.
We oftentimes go from 0 to 100 and then back to 0.
Instead, what we should do is go from 0 to 10, 10 to 20, 20 to 30, & so forth.
We need gradual changes.
We need to ween off regular soda and opt in for the diet soda then to eventually sparkling water.
We don’t need to commit 5x a week to the gym right away but rather walk around our neighborhoods for 30 minutes as often as possible.
Incremental steps is the most sustainable way to see long lasting changes.
Remember that it’s a process.
There are no “instant hacks” in the game of lifestyle change.
Emphasis on “game” because if you can “gamify” your process, you might even see yourself starting to enjoy it.
For example, have a spouse, family member, or friend join you in a friendly game of who can get the most steps walking in a week then whoever loses can treat the other out to dinner.
This way you’re not only having friendly competition but also having accountability from others around you who will hopefully want to get healthier too.
Change is not always easy but there are definitely wants to make it more fun and enjoyable.
The key is to be proactive in finding your favorite ways to enjoy the process.
